The latest off of the bench, and heading to Spokane in the morning is rod number 3 for this angler from my shop. May I introduce you all to ” The Redwood “, a Winter Run 13′ 0” for a 9/10 wt. designed with my Parabolic Taper. This rod was designed years ago for some of my favourite steelhead rivers ……..The Clearwater, The Salmon and The Snake. I love throwing long lines and long rods on Big Water and wanted a rod that would not only keep up with my 15 and 16 foot graphite rods on rivers like these, but still allow me to fish my cane rods with longer lines effectively. This one nails it and is the largest rod that I build. This rod is now available for commission and featured on my website under the “Speciality Rods” tab. These rods at this length surprise people with how light they are, how responsive they are and how fast a recovery they have ……… not to mention how easy to cast. This rod favours a Scandi around 525 – 575 grains, a Skagit around 550 – 600 depending on what tips are being used or a Mid Belly around 675 grains based on casting preferences. Bruce Kruk loves a Galeforce ESH #9 and # 10 on his Redwood. A line I need and plan on giving a go on this rod, very soon. This blond rod is wrapped with vintage Belding Corticelli silk in Antique Gold tipped Black. The reel seat hardware comes from Lemke Components and has one of the custom reel seats I get from Joel, to fit the vintage Pre War Hardy and classic reels that this angler favours. The custom length reel seat is a beautiful, figured piece of Birdseye Maple that was turned in my shop. The ” Perfect Agate Brand ” in banded golden yellow – agate stripping guides come @fishon_customrods and are the larger 24/20mm size that I use on this model. The silver guides are Perfection guides from REC that give it that classic, old school look. Scott – I hope you Love rod # 3 and I can’t wait to meet up sometime on The Clearwater and swing a few runs together with our Redwood’s. Welcome to The Club ………

May I introduce you all to a model that I will be putting up on my website DavidLReidbamboo.com and making available for commission …….. ” The Half Pounder “. This build was designed to chase after one of the only positive runs we have had in the last couple of years in our PNW rivers. This rod was designed to chase after these one year, juvenile steelhead (average size 15 – 22″ ) as well as ” A run ” sized steelhead ( average size 4 – 7 pounds) that are in the rivers at the same time. An angler can choose to throw normal steelhead gear, but when getting into the half pounders – it’s overkill. An angler could also fish a trout spey, but when a steelhead latches onto your bug …… you will have wished you were fishing more appropriate gear. This rod fishes both effectively and allows the angler to fish one rod instead of carrying two, or feeling compromised when on the river. This flamed rod is one of my personal sticks and I fish it with one of the 3 1/2″ Dingley reels pictured and a Nexcast ff45 in a 4/5. The rod sports a custom reel seat I have Lemke Components build for me to accept the wider and longer reel feet of the vintage clicker reels that I favour. This tod has a reel seat insert of Olivewood from Bethlehem. The rod is wrapped in vintage Belding Corticelli silk in Dark Tangerine tipped Black which reminds me of my favourite bug – an October Caddis. The Amber Stripping Guides come from the shop of Joe Arguello. The silver guides are Perfection from REC. This rod comes in a Parabolic and a Semi Parabolic taper and would also excel fishing for bull trout, landlocked salmon and smallmouth. I am Geek’d to share this taper with anglers who love these rivers and their special quarry like The Rogue, The Klamath and The Trinity rivers ………

This rod favours a Scandi around 540 grains, a Skagit around 540 – 600 grains depending on tips used, or a Mid Belly around 630 grains. I personally fish a Nexcast ff45 8/9 on my rod. This rod is wrapped in vintage Belding Corticelli silk in Antique Gold, tipped black. ……. which is one of my all time favourite colour schemes, and one I use a lot on my own personal rods. My latest bamboo two handed spey rod off of the bench, will be heading out to Washington in the morning. This Winter Run 12′ 9″ for a 7 wt. designed with my Parabolic Taper, is the fourth rod that this angler has commissioned from me, and truthfully ……. this might be my favourite build so far. This build sports a reel seat and matching accent bands of Padauk hardwood turned on my lathe, which matches the red silk wraps tipped black perfectly. In fact, I love this look so much that I will now be building a new rod for myself with this identical color scheme. Personal Rods – Part 2 …….. I figured that this rod would be a good one to post in this series, as it just got completed this last week. I first built this rod in the spring of 2015 and I have fished it all over the PNW on rivers like The John Day, CW, GR and The D. I have been using it with a leaded 1940’s 3 3/4″ Hardy Perfect which had the shorter ribbed brass foot and straight writing. But like all people obsessed with these vintage clicker reels, I ended up purchasing a couple older models in the 3 3/4″ size from the 30’s with the longer and wider feet, that my old reel seat wouldn’t accommodate without sanding the reel foot. I decided I would update this rod for my new reels, strip down the rod to bare cane and put a Lemke Reel Seat that I get custom made to fit these wonderfull reels of yesteryear. It was about that time that I also acquired a few sets of Agate stripping guides that had milky grey agates from Joe Arguello and I knew it was time for a full re-build of this rod. One of the issues, besides finding time while working on my clients rods was finding the vintage Belding Corticelli silk in Yellow Corn # 3045 to match the wraps on the mid and tip sections. A post on one of the Classicflyrod forum and the community came thru and I was off and running. I am super excited to get this new updated version out on the water. I have been fishing this rod with a Nexcast FF45 in a 6/7 @ 510 grains and love this combo. Just recently @duncdunc sent me a 6/7 Tributary line from Bridge Soey Lines @ 525 grains to demo and I loved that line as well. I will definitely be buying one of those in the future. Such a Great community that we have among those who love to swing their fly. The reel seat is one of my favourites ……. a beautifull piece of burled Israeli Olivewood. The guides are Silver Perfection guides from REC. If there was such a thing as a do everything rod for steelhead, this size might be it. I would never hit a river and not have this stick with me ……….

I get a lot of inquiries about the rods that I personally use and the tackle I use on them. I figured I would start posting these on my pages as well and why I created them, from time to time. Let’s start with this one ……. this rod is a blond Fall Run in a 12′ 0″ for an 8/9 weight, built with one of my Semi Parabolic tapers. I just re wrapped her as I loved the colour scheme I used on the Rick F. and Todd H. builds. She was originally wrapped with “Payne colours” of Java Brown tipped gold, but I like this colour scheme better, so I took a razor to the wraps, scraped and sanded off the varnish to bare cane and started again. I could have just made a new rod, but there are way too many memories with this rod over the years. I started designing this rod back in 2014, when our Family moved back to Idaho from Michigan. After a few design attempts in working out the taper to what I wanted …….. this rod was built in September of 2017. For those who know me, I love fishing and casting mid and long bellies as well as skating dry flies. This rod was designed to skate bugs and chase the mighty “B” runs on The Clearwater, Snake and Salmon rivers. I now find myself using this rod almost all of the time, when fishing these rivers and it is one of my favourites tapers I have ever designed. The rod sports Belding Corticelli silk wraps in Dark Tangerine tipped black. The reel seat is from Lemke Components and has a Oregon Spalted Maple insert. The Agate stripping guide is amber and the guides are silver Snake Brand. The reel seat was custom built to accept the longer and wider feet of my favored vintage Pre War Hardy Peffects. Posted in the picture are the two main reels that I use with this set up …….. a 3 3/4″ and a 4″ Hardy Perfects. I fish a Nexcast FF45 in an 8/9 wt. which is around 630 grains. This set up brings me so much joy fishing some of my favourite steelhead rivers I have been Bleesed to step into ……..

The latest off of the bench and the first for the month of December ……. is heading out to Colorado. This rod is a Blond 10′ 0″ for a 2 wt. Trout Spey in a Parabolic taper. These 2 wts. are amazing fishing tools, the equivalent of a 4 wt. single hand rod that throws a Scandi at 180 grains or a Skagit at 210 grains, based on casting preferences. These 2 wt. Trout Speys are not toys, nor are they just for throwing soft hackles,. This taper will throw T8 on the short Skagit that are so popular today and will excel at swinging smaller streamers for those aggressive fish. This blond rod has straw coloured silk wraps tipped black. The black and white agate stripping guides come from the shop of Joe Arguello. The hardware is Lemke Components and the wood insert is Olive Wood. The silver guides are Snake Brand. This is the 3rd 2 wt. Trout Spey that I’ve sent out to The State of Colorado and I would have to say that it is an Awesome stick to be using on its rivers. David, I hope you love your rod and I cant wait to see pics of this stick in action ……..

Another Cane Two Hander off of the bench, heading out to fish the storied waters of the PNW. This rod is one of my favourite tapers I’ve created and designed. This rod is a Fall Run 11′ 6″ for a 5/6 wt. designed with a Semi Parabolic taper. This rod favours a Scandi of 390 grains or a Skagit of 420 grains, based on casting preferences. I personally fish a Nextcast ff45 at 475 grains on my own personal rod. The wraps are Belding Corticelli silk in Limerick Green tipped with black silk. The blued reel seat hardware is from Lemke Components and the guides are Perfection from REC. The wood is LIgnum Vitae, custom turned to accept the longer feet of the vintage reels that this angler favours. The Banded Green Agate stripping guides come from the shop of Joe Arguello and tie this rod all together. Such a great rod for skating bugs to willing steelhead or swinging wets, chasing Summer Runs and into the fall. I cant wait to hear about her adventures ……..
The latest build off of the bench and heading North to BC ……… May I introduce you to The Redwood. She is a blond Winter Run 13′ 0″ for a 9/10 wt. with a Parabolic design. She throws a Scandi of 575 grains, a Skagit of 625 grains or a short/mid belly of 700 grains based on casting preferences. The rod is wrapped in vintage Belding Corticelli silk in Limerick Green tipped Black. She sports Silver hardware and Perfection guides. The real seat is Olive Wood ( probably my favourite species of wood) and the down locking hardware is from Lemke Components. The Green Banded Agate Stripping Guides come from the shop of Joe Arguello. The grip was custom ordered to be shaped thin, and this is one of the great facets to ordering a custom rod. You’re getting a rod that is designed to fit you and you’re casting stroke. I hope you love this rod Bruce and I can’t wait to see pics of those mighty steel head sized rainbows that live in the Upper Columbia river.
Off the bench, and heading East tomorrow to Upstate New York …….. a Blond Fall Run 12′ 0″ for an 8/9 wt. This rod loves to throw a 540 Scandi or 600 grain Skagit based on casting preferences. Word is, that this rod excels with a Galeforce Equalizer 9 wt. At 523 grains. This rod sports a Black Walnut reel seat and silver hardware. The wraps are vintage Belding Corticelli silk in Forrest Green tipped Java Brown, and I truthfully can’t think of a more appropriate colour scheme for the rivers this angler fishes in his part of the country. The Green Agate Stripping guides come from the shop of Joe Arguello. The reel seat hardware was made by Lemke Components. I can’t wait to see pics of steelhead caught with this rod and the beautiful “tied in hand” classic flies that this angler spins out. I hope you love your rod Steve …….
My latest rod off of the bench, is heading off tomorrow to Issaquah, WA. to a very fishy angler and all around good guy. The rod is a lightly flamed Fall Run 12′ 0″ for a 6/7 with a Semi Parabolic taper. This rod throws a 420 grain Scandi or a 475 grain Skagit based on casting preferences. My personal line of choice on this rod is a Nexcast FF45 in 510 grains. This lightly flamed rod is wrapped in Belding Corticelli purple silk wraps, tipped gold. The blued hardware comes from Lemke. Here is another rod off of the bench from a couple of months ago. It’s a Paul Young Midge taper, a 6′ 3″ for a 4 wt. ……. one of my favourite tapers, from my favourite builders of yesteryear, Paul Young. This taper was actually the fourth rod I ever built. In fact 5 of my first 6 rods that I built were Paul Young tapers, the other was a Payne. I still fish all of those rods to this day. This rod sports a Lemke slide band over a cork reel seat and has Belding Corticelli Antique Gold wraps. To be honest, in my opinion, everyone should own this taper ……. its truly that good of a rod
