Two Handed Spey Rods

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE, FISH CANE ……….

If there is another fish out there that brings out the kind of obsessiveness in humans that the Steelhead or Atlantic Salmon seems to bring out in those who fish for them ……….. I’ve yet to discover it. The ability to go on no sleep and to travel uncounted miles to ply seemingly empty water for days or weeks on end – seeking that one grab only drives this pursuit. Chores and “honey-do” lists continue to get put on the back burner. The everyday “noise” and what is usually considered and categorized under the header of “daily life” gets set aside and kicked to the curb for just those precious months ………. without fear of consequence. The yearly journey that this beautiful and majestic fish takes to return to the very gravel bed of its birth stream to bring forth future generations is perfection in its simplest form. There is just something so beautiful in this simple, natural act …… it’s life and it’s re-birth. It has been said that such a majestic creature deserves to be chased ethically and with grace; what a better way to experience and pursue these beautiful fish than with a bamboo rod ………

At Custom Cane Rods by David L Reid, we offer three different models with three unique taper designs to best cover the fishing situations an angler may encounter out on the river.

The Fall Run:

The Fall Run taper is all about being diverse. A morning on a fall river might find you skating a Greased Liner in a tail out at first light. It may find you swinging a small traditional iron through a glassy, boulder filled run in the early morning. The high sun of an afternoon may find you swinging a larger iron through some choppy water. The type of water that most would walk right by because they believe it could never hold a fish in the bright light of the afternoon. Instead of having to grab multiple rods throughout the day because of the different water fished, line systems used, and flies thrown …….. the Semi parabolic is the one rod that can be used all day long. Of course, that evening it will be time to return to waking flies and end up where you started that morning. It’s always time to skate an October Caddis at the days last light to feel that one last grab. And this rod is the one to do it …………

Being flexible is definitely the key to success and a Semi – Parabolic taper is the rod design that best fits that bill. This rod excels at multiple presentations and line systems. This taper is comfortable with short head tapers whether it be a short mid head of 35-50 foot, a Scandi or Skagit casting system. These wonderful tapers allow you to almost cast effortlessly, and get lost in the rhythm of all that is going on around you …..

The Winter Run:

This second taper is a fully Parabolic design and it’s all about getting it done with power without losing all the things that are wonderful about casting cane rods. This taper not only excels at throwing T8 and T11 tips on a Skagit system, but is also an Awesome choice and a perfect rod for throwing big bushy dries made of foam or moose and deer hair. The Parabolic design has two kick points built into its design. This allows a caster who employs more bottom hand to load the rod in the top third of the rod and create tight loops. This taper allows the angler to drive the load deep down the blank. This translates into a rod that works very well with the modern short lines with the intention of swinging their fly deeper in the water column. This series excels with all modern line systems and is our most versatile for chasing Winter and Summer Runs equally.

This rod throws line effortlessly and shouldn’t be overlooked when thinking about throwing a dry line either. Just load it up and let it sling your line across the river to your intended target. This rod isn’t your grandfather’s cane rod …….. it’s meant to do some work.

The Summer Run:

The Summer Run is all about the dry line …….. and it’s designed around the skated fly. The design is a progressive nature and is built around the pursuit of taking anadromous fish on the surface. This Progressive Taper casts a dry line beautifully with an accurate presentation. This rod is an ideal rod to throw traditional irons or skate dries.

The Summer Run translates the feel of your cast through the rod into your hands and is an excellent choice for those who enjoy casting with dry lines. This rod also favours a smooth casting stroke. This rod’s taper creates a slow easing casting tempo that the angler can feel throughout the entire rod. The Summer Run is all about hitting buckets and seams and walking a skater down into the tail out. This rod is a pleasure to cast and when accuracy and precision are the game, this is the rod to grab …….
