The Order Process

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE, FISH CANE ………..

Hello there, my name Is David Reid ……… and I am obsessed with Cane Rods and old clicker reels.

So, you’re finding yourself a little “cane curious”, or maybe a veteran in the owning and obsession known as “Cane Rods”, and you’re wondering to yourself how do I go about making this happen?

My goal in making Cane rods for people is driven by creating wonderful fishing tools, heirlooms that could be passed down to family members or close friends. I create rods that are not only highly functional and effective, but are the rod that the Angler will think of when he is off the water waiting for that next trip or adventure. My goal would be that these are the tools of choice that the angler grabs first, whether he is heading off for a week steelhead camp, hitting the local river or creek, or heading off to float a local lake. It’s also about the connection I make with the Customer that lasts beyond the purchase. My goal and obsession is to create something that the Angler is proud of. A Custom Cane Rod by David L. Reid is just that …….. a connection to the past. It is a way to slow down and connect with nature, and fish a material that truly translates the feeling of catching and landing a fish in a way that no other material can mimic.

  • All of our cane rods built at Custom Cane Rods by David L. Reid use the traditional Hexagon or six sided rods design pattern. Although there has been some growing interest over the years with Quads (4 sided) or Penta (5 sided) rods, we feel the Hex rod design is by far still the best geometry and style of cane rod to build. We feel by using this design we are utilizing this amazing material in the best application for both performance and feel.
  • All of our Two Handed Spey and our Trout Spey Models are designed and made utilizing a Hollow Built design. This not only lightens the weight of the rod, but more importantly speeds up the recovery of the cast. Our rods are made with the highest quality components. This gives our rods a more modern feel, and compliments the newer lines that have been designed and come out on the market in the last ten years. The bamboo rods of old were intended to lift lines and therefore are not as adept or user friendly as the cane rods being produced today. Most people are really surprised at how light our rods feel in hand let alone the feeling of how they cast. They are taken back by the speed of recovery in our rods and how alive they feel in their hands while casting, and most importantly …… how these rods fight fish.
  • Tonkin Cane is used in our rods here at Custom Cane Rods by David L. Reid. We use a single culm for one of our rods instead of the production method of grabbing multiple strips from culms that had been spilt at one time. We choose a culm based on its properties such as node spacing, power fibers, weight of the culm and surface cosmetics to best match the design of the taper chosen.
  • We use the highest quality components in our rods. High Grade Flor cork that is shipped to us from Portugal is used for the grip. We use the highest quality silk for the wrapping of our guides and Agate Stripping guides. Included in the price of the build each rod comes with a custom rod sock, rod tube and splice protectors for our spliced built rods. Please contact us for Custom options including reel seat inserts and colour combinations.

The process of getting a Custom Cane Rod by David L. Reid is pretty easy and straight forward. It starts with a simple email, phone call, pm and/or text. If you already know what you are looking for, the process will start from there. We will start with a discussion about the size of the fish, rivers and line systems that you intend to use this rod for. We will dig in to the characteristics of what you like in rods that you have owned or fished before. We will talk about your expectations for this project. These answers will help us narrow down your choice and will allow us to place you in “The Perfect Rod”, for you. These questions and interactions can sometimes be a 15 minute call and sometimes can last over a period of time. Our goal in this project is to create an effective fishing tool, as well as a lifetime treasure. In the end, it’s “How” you enjoy your time on our rivers and water that creates the memories that will be stored away and remembered fondly ……..
