Single Hand Trout Rods

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE, FISH CANE ………..

Single Hand Cane Rods:

I remember fishing Silver Creek years ago, back in the late 1980’s ……. most of my first experiences on The Creek were of watching the scenery. And by scenery I mean large, beautiful trout rising and grabbing all available flies off of the surface. Of course, I am referring to those bugs that weren’t attached to the end of my leader. I spent most of my early days on this river observing the fish and how they reacted in their natural environment, undisturbed. I also watched the “old timers” and observed how they approached this special river.

This is a practice that I still use to this day, when I am approaching a new piece of water. I learned quickly that casting for “castings sake” and careless wading were the two biggest factors that would contribute to a “bagel” at the end of the day. I also figured out by watching these “keepers of the stream”, that close, short and accurate casts were the call of the day. Another thing that I noticed was that most of these wiser, older and experienced guys were fishing cane rods and old clicker reels.

I finally got the nerve up to start asking the question of “why”? The overwhelming answer was because cane rods were the best fishing tool to get the performance that they needed. They would explain that a cane rod protected the light tippets used when setting the hook on these trout. They explained that the fibers that made up the bamboo were the best material available in playing these highly prized fish. They then went on to say …… you haven’t truly experienced fighting a trout until you feel it on a cane rod. I spent a lot of years buying and using graphite rods that supposedly cast and fought “like a cane rod”, only to find out that no graphite rod “casts nor plays fish like a cane rod”. I could have saved myself a lot of time, money and needless searching for that “perfect rod”, had I only listened as a young man to those who had already figured it out. Oh, to be a young again ……..
